Does Thallium Poisoning explain Crookes' Results?

Dear Mike,

I first came across the idea that William Crookes had unwittingly poisoned himself with thallium some months ago in a book by Renee Haynes called "The Society for Psychical Research. 1882-1982 - A History" (Macdonald, 1982). According to Haynes, even New Scientist once suggested the idea!

As you know, Dr. J. M. Gully of the Royal College of Surgeons recorded the physical differences between the medium Florence Cook and the materialised figure Katie King: all were different proving they were two separate entities. In confirmation of this fact are approximately 40 different photographs of Katie King taken by Crookes. Click here: http://www.survivalafterdeath.org/photographs.htm

Surely a camera cannot 'hallucinate' along with Crookes, Gully and a room full of competent, intelligent witnesses at the same time on the same hallucination! Several photographs show the two separate individuals together and Crookes was even photographed arm-in-arm with Mrs. King! As Crookes himself said:

"My whole scientific education has been one long lesson in exactness of observation."

Clearly then "Katie King" was someone, and even the most hostile critic must agree with Crookes:

"... the supposition that there is a sort of mania or delusion which suddenly attacks a whole room full of intelligent persons who are quite sane elsewhere, and that they all concur to the minutest particulars, in the details of the occurrences of which they suppose themselves to be witnesses, seems to my mind more incredible than even the facts they attest."
