Experimental proof of survival after death

Dear Michael,

Thanks for the message about Crookes. Indeed Crookes was a very serious and successful scientist, who did all the pioneer work on cathode rays - at school we all learn about the "Crookes dark space" in a discharge tube. There was no question about the seriousness of his psychic investigations, and his endorsement of Katie King represented a real challenge to science. It was a challenge which science flunked, of course, perhaps because conventional scientists were being asked to swallow too much too quickly.

It exceeded their "boggle threshold". It says much for Crookes' bravery that he did not flinch from reporting everything that he experienced, despite the likelihood that he would be derided as being taken in by a fraudulent medium. Even so, he was held in such regard that although during his lifetime he was attacked for gullibility, it was only after his death that some coward proposed that he was claiming all these results because he was really having an affair with the medium!

Best wishes

Peter Wadhams
